Oct 17 - El Mundo Claims UK Supported Spain’s UN Security Council Bid
17 October 2014
The Spanish daily El Mundo has claimed that the United Kingdom supported Spain’s successful bid to win a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
El Mundo claims that Spain’s campaign, which had become a matter of national pride for the country, had received support from all the permanent members of the UNSC including the United Kingdom “despite the dispute over Gibraltar.”
Spain also says that it received the backing of all South American nations apart from Brazil.
Spain was selected to serve on the UNSC after winning an overall majority following two head-to-head votes against Turkey.
