Sep 28 - GWA Calls For Review Following “Lenient” Sentence Given To Motorbike Rider
The Gibraltar Women’s Association (GWA) says it is concerned at the “lenient” sentence given in a recently reported case, where a motorbike driver was fined what it describes as the “paltry sum” of £250 after clipping the side of a pram holding a three week old baby and throwing the baby to the ground. The GWA is now requesting a complete review of local motor offense laws.
A statement continued: “In line with our aim to be a voice for women to protect the interest of our community, we feel that motor offenses are becoming more frequent due to the lenient sentencing in our courts. In the interest of a safe community, we would like the laws to be completely reviewed to increase sentences, introduce points to licenses and the removal of licenses for serious offenses and repeat offenders. We would encourage the immediate firm use of current motor laws by the courts to ensure that traffic incidences are reduced. The GWA, as with other issues brought to our attention, will be following this up with the relevant ministry.”
