Jul 28 - Commemorating World War One, One Hundred Years Later

ww1 commemoration This morning a service of commemoration and remembrance on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of world war 1 was hosted in John Mackintosh square, bringing together leaders and members of all of Gibraltar’s religious denominations to pay tribute to those who served in the war.

Prayers were read by former mayor and prominent member of the Jewish community, Momy Levy, Hindu community member Deepa Aidasani, the Islamic Faith Leader, Mgr Paul Bear and Reverend Mark Jackson..

A further speech, paying tribute to Gibraltarians in the war, was read out by Chief Minister Fabian Picardo. His Excellency the Governor, Lieutenant General Sir James Dutton read Binyon’s Lines from the war poem ‘For the Fallen’ first published in the Times in 1914. The words read, ‘they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’

Following the ceremony, which was attended by many current and former servicemen and women in Gibraltar, from across the Forces spectrum, a reception was hosted at Grand Battery House, during which Fabian Picardo insisted that ‘we will never forget those who laid down their lives, and the cause of fighting for freedom. Gibraltar played a small part in that First World War, as part of British and Allied Forces.’ ww1 commemoration

He went on to note that the saddest thing about today ‘is that we’re talking about the Frist World War, and the Second World War and that the second World War came later. And that man doesn’t always learn as quickly as he should, from his own mistakes. Let us hope that we don’t need to commemorate more than a Second World War. Let us thanks all of the members of the Armed Forces who are here with us today for the work that they do not just in war, but also in peace.’
