Statement On Forfeiture Of Charles Montegriffo’s MBE

The Office of the Governor has confirmed that Charles Montegriffo’s MBE has been cancelled and annulled following his conviction and sentencing.

A statement from the Office of The Governor follows below:

Mr Charles Montegriffo had previously been appointed a Member of the Order of the  British Empire (MBE) in the New Year Honours List 2007 for his service as Honorary  Treasurer of the Gibraltar Red Cross.

After Mr Montegriffo's guilty plea, conviction and sentencing to 14 years’ imprisonment for sexual offences against a child, His Excellency the Governor  referred the case for consideration by the Honours Forfeiture Committee. The  Governor had conferred with the Chief Minister and the Justice Minister before  proceeding.

The Honours Forfeiture Committee considered Mr Montegriffo's case and on the  recommendation of the Prime Minister, His Majesty The King has now directed that  Mr Montegriffo's appointment as MBE should be cancelled and annulled and that his  name should be removed from the Register of the Order.

Mr Montegriffo has been formally notified of this decision. He has returned his MBE  insignia which has been sent back to Buckingham Palace and he is no longer  permitted to use the post-nominal letters MBE. A notice giving effect to the forfeiture  has been published in the London Gazette on 1 October 2026.
