Dec 08 - Action4Schools Raises £8,000 for Ebola

ebola fund The dinner dance hosted by local charity Action4schools-Sierra Leone held at the Calpe Rowing Club on Saturday 6th December raised funds in aid of the "ebola orphans appeal" which the charity recently launched in Gibraltar. The charity had pledged £2,000 from general funds, the event raised £4,500, a £500 donation was received from the Rotary Club of Gibraltar and then a further £1,000 donation was made by an anonymous guest of the dinner, raising the total to £8,000.

Earlier this year the charity built a water well for UK charity Heaven Homes (http://www.heaven-homes.org/) which runs a primary school and a care home for 120 children in the village of Joe Town, Newton just outside the capital Freetown.

Having recently adopted 36 ebola orphans, the home urgently need funds to build accommodation for them and Action4schools have launched a specific appeal in Gibraltar to help raise funds for the building project.

Kippy Agyei, founder of Heaven Homes, attended this weekend’s dinner at which she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people of Gibraltar, noting that ‘Ebola will leave behind a terrible legacy and that is a huge number of orphans which have lost everything and at times are rejected by their families and communities.’

Event organiser Jimmy Bruzon expressed his delight having been able to directly impact on the lives of affected children in Sierra Leone. He commented, ‘the children of Sierra Leone need our support more than ever and we are committed to helping them out for as long as we can not just with improved schools, water and sanitation facilities and education in general but also with the emotional and social aspects of this terrible epidemic which is a huge set back and threat to the country. We want to make a difference and thank the people of Gibraltar for their ongoing support and amazing generosity".

The charity will further host a  carol singing fundraiser at Morrison's this coming Saturday 13th December. Seven local school choirs will be involved and volunteers and singers are welcome to fill in the afternoon slots.
