Feb 06 - Man Accused Of Wounding Ex With A Drill – Trial Starts

The Supreme Court trial of a man accused of wounding his former partner with a drill started this morning.

It is alleged that Joseph Anthony Prescott, 56, attacked his ex-girlfriend after getting into an argument with her in August last year.

Prosecutors said that Prescott, who had allegedly been drinking, lost his temper and threw a drink over the couple’s 12-week-old baby.

He is then accused of punching and scratching her before pushing her onto the floor and stabbing her with a cordless drill in her right leg and the back of her head.

Prescott, of Varyl Begg Estate, has pleaded not guilty to one count of wounding with intent.

Appearing for the prosecution, Mark Clive Zammit said the victim suffered two puncture wounds: one to her leg and another to her head.

At around 3pm on the day of the incident, PC John Victor and Acting Sergeant Annabel Santos responded to the call and, on approaching the house, saw Prescott’s partner, who was known to them, walking out and pushing the pram in a hurry, looking distressed with blood dripping down her leg from a wound.

The woman and her baby were taken to New Mole House Police Station for questioning before being taken to the Women’s Refuge. Prescott was arrested and the drill was recovered after officers found red stains on the drill that resembled blood and entwined hair that matched the complainant’s.

The jury was shown a series of photographs depicting the woman’s wounds and a plea which the defendant had posted on social media group Speak Freely was read out in court, in which he asked his former partner for her forgiveness and asked her to reconsider coming back to him, saying he wasn’t the “monster” she made him out to be.

Giving evidence in court, Prescott’s ex said she and the defendant became friends and had been romantically involved for more than a year when the incident took place.

She said he was a good father but they had started arguing because he was unable to secure a place for them to live after she returned from Wales and they were living in a one-bedroom apartment with his former partner.

The woman will continue to give her evidence at the trial which continues tomorrow morning.

Justin Phillips appeared for the defendant.
