Literary Festival Fringe Preview: Karl Ullger Book Launch
As part of a series of ‘fringe’ events for this year’s Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival, local artist Karl Ullger will hold a book launch in City Hall on Wednesday 4th November at 6:30pm.
Karl will discusses his new book in conversation with Alice Mascarenhas, featuring Martin Gonzalez as part of the panel. Titled ‘Echoes of Legacy’, the book examines a series of works paying homage to iconic paintings throughout history, interpreted through the artist’s own perspective. Each piece offers a personal interpretation of the original’s style, technique, emotion and composition, presenting celebrated masterpieces through a contemporary lens.
The event includes a recorded performance of ‘Ophelia’, produced by the Movement Collective. The programme concludes with ‘Quiet Inferno’, featuring three male dancers in a performance exploring mental health.
Speaking to YGTV, Karl said: “I felt this was a different outlook to what you would find in a normal art book. The book is mainly based on famous household name artists and their work and how those masterpieces have influenced my work; in some cases this is more obvious, and, in others, the influence is more subtle and indirect.”
The book will be available to purchase for £20, with £5 from every sale donated to GibSams.
