Active Travel Month will return from 7th September to 4th October with a four-week programme encouraging walking, cycling and other sustainable ways to travel around Gibraltar.

A statement from OTWO, the Sustainable Transport Action Group and Active Travel Month follows below:

Following the outstanding success of its inaugural campaign, Active Travel Month returns in 2026 with a four-week programme  running from Monday 7th September to Sunday 4th October (inclusive). The initiative encourages healthier lifestyles, promotes  sustainable transport and inspires people of all ages to rethink the way they travel around Gibraltar.

The 2025 campaign exceeded all expectations, attracting 814 participants across 37 teams representing businesses, schools,  charities, sports clubs and community organisations. Together, participants logged almost 88,000 kilometres through walking,  cycling, running and other forms of active travel, the equivalent to travelling around the world more than twice. The initiative also  raised £1,830 for the Gibraltar Cardiac Association and Diabetes Gibraltar, while demonstrating the positive impact active travel  can have on health, wellbeing and the environment.

Building on that remarkable success, Active Travel Month 2026 will once again bring together organisations from across Gibraltar  through a varied programme of organised walks, cycling events, workplace challenges, school initiatives and public awareness  campaigns, encouraging more people than ever to swap short car journeys for walking, cycling and other sustainable ways of  getting around.

One of the highlights of this year's programme will be the World Bicycle Day Community Ride, which following its  postponement from EcoFestival, will now form part of Active Travel Month. In keeping with the campaign's aim of encouraging  active travel in all its forms, this year's event will welcome cyclists, runners and walkers alike.

Taking place on Sunday 4th October, the 11-kilometre community route is expected to bring together hundreds of participants of  all ages and abilities in a celebration of healthier lifestyles, active travel and sustainable transport. Whether participants choose to  cycle, run or walk, the event offers an opportunity for the whole community to come together.

The celebrations will continue after the event with a community BBQ at the new Udaya Chiringuito Beach Club, where cyclists,  runners, walkers, together with their families and supporters, are invited to enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the beach.

Further details of the BBQ, entertainment and family activities will be announced in the coming weeks.

Registration will open shortly on BuyTickets.gi, with two ticket options available: a Ride, Run or Walk Only ticket, or a Ride,  Run or Walk & BBQ ticket, which includes entry to the post-event BBQ and food.

A map of the community route accompanies this press release to help participants familiarise themselves with the route ahead of  the event.

Following the conclusion of Active Travel Month, organisers will collate the kilometres completed throughout the four-week  challenge before hosting an awards presentation, where trophies and certificates will be presented to recognise this year's  outstanding participants. Further details will be announced closer to the date.

Organisers hope that the continued growth of Active Travel Month will inspire even more people to embrace healthier and more  sustainable travel habits, creating lasting benefits for individuals, businesses and Gibraltar as a whole.

Further information on the full programme, registration and tickets will be announced over the coming weeks.
