GSD Asks Government For Date On Student Grant Increase

The GSD is asking the Government to confirm when the announced 5.4% increase to student maintenance grants will be paid.

Shadow Education Minister Edwin Reyes said students were approaching halfway through the first term without receiving the increase announced by the Chief Minister in July.

A statement from the GSD follows below:

The GSD Opposition have received repeated inquiries from current students in respect of  when the announced increase of Maintenance Grants will be paid.

The Chief Minister announced during his Budget Adress in July “The Maintenance Grant will  be increased by the rate of inflation, namely 5.4%.”

Shadow Education Minister Edwin Reyes said: “with students now nearly half way through  the first term of this current Academic Year it is not unreasonable for recipients of Grants to  express disappointment at not having received the announced increase”.

The GSD is told that enquiries by students and/or their families at the Department of  Education have proved futile and Government have been unable to provide a date by when  payments will be made. The Opposition therefore calls upon Government to issue a firm  date by when our students will be in receipt of the announced Grant Maintenance increase.
