Feb 07 - La Linea Mayor Visits Chief Minister – Brexit Tops The Agenda

Brexit was at the forefront of discussions between the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and La Linea Mayor Juan Franco during a meeting held at Number Six earlier today.

Sr Franco said he is worried about the effects Brexit may have on the fluidity of movement of cross-frontier workers, adding that he still doesn’t know what measures will be imposed on the frontier by the Spanish government in Madrid once Article 50 is triggered.

Mr Picardo said it is in both Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar’s interests to continue being able to cross the frontier, not just because of work, but for leisure as well.

Responding to a question from the press about whether the new Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Alfonso Dastis will help relations between Spain and Gibraltar, Mr Picardo said that although the tone and the attitude had changed, the substance of what he says remains the same as what’s been previously said by his predecessor José Manuel García-Margallo.

Sr Franco said he hopes Gibraltar continues to thrive, and hopes an agreement is reached between the UK, Spain and Gibraltar that will see a continuation of cross-border fluidity, adding that when Gibraltar sneezes, La Linea catches a cold.

At the start of the meeting, Mr Picardo gave his condolences to the Mayor and the people of La Linea following the death of former La Linea Mayor Jose Antonio Fernandez Pons, who passed away at the weekend, describing him as a great advocate for good cross-frontier relationships.
