Feb 24 - GSD Condemns ABC Article
The GSD condemns as “irresponsible and inaccurate the scandalous article” published in the ABC newspaper on 23rd February.
The Opposition in particular condemns the description of Gibraltar as a ‘base for pirates and corsairs’. The use of such language, says the GSD, is “depressingly reminiscent of a darker period in Spain’s political history, of which many generations of Gibraltarians will have, once again, been reminded.”
The ABC newspaper, says the Opposition, “in a most sensationalist fashion, seeks to make Gibraltar responsible for Spain’s economic ills. It attempts to tar Gibraltar with the brushes of corruption and illegality that afflict so many levels of the Spanish political establishment.”
The substance of the ABC article, according to the GSD, “is so riddled with unsubstantiated sweeping statements and inaccuracies that it would appear that its sole aim is to slander our community and those who chose to live in Gibraltar.”
It is worth noting, adds the GSD, that whilst the ABC continues to publish “such shameful lies and inflammatory accusations targeting Gibraltar, it ignores the allegations of corruption made against the leaders of its own Government.”
"It is very unfortunate that in 2015, attempts should be made by certain forces in Spain to gratuitously immerse Gibraltar in the eye of Spain’s political storm. We should not be there and we do not belong there. We trust that the majority of Spaniards, whether from the right or the left of the ideological divide, will see through this blatant attempt at attention diverting,” concluded a spokesman for the GSD.
