Oct 27 - Gibraltar National Archives Host "Mapping Our Past" Exhibition
More than 100 historic maps of Gibraltar have gone on display at the Fine Arts Centre as part of the Gibraltar National Archives outreach programme.
The “Mapping Our Past” exhibition was formally launched by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia yesterday evening, and will run until Friday 11th November.
Dr Garcia said that from a historical perspective it is very interesting, adding that the earliest map dates back to when Gibraltar was ruled by Spain in 1468, others dating back to 1627, and many of them depict to military attempts to capture Gibraltar.
The exhibition was put together by National Archivist Anthony Pitaluga and Collections Officer Gerard Wood and a number of volunteers, with the aim to represent more than 100 maps and 3000 digital maps in their cartographic holdings. The maps were collected from the officers and men of the Royal Engineers Regiment as well as draftsmen, surveyors and engineers from the City Council, later known as Public Works.
Schools will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition so that pupils may see a piece of Gibraltar’s history for themselves.
