Apr 03 - Regimental Work Experience For Bayside Students

Sixteen year 10 students from Bayside are spending a week with the Royal Gibraltar Regiment for work experience.

WO2 Leigh Thorne from the Recruiting Office created a varied programme which give them an opportunity to experience as much of regimental life as possible, he said: ““We start the week off with a tour of the Regiment to give them a deeper understanding of the roles available to them.”

“During the week they will spend a day with the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and complete challenging tasks including hook and line scenarios, they will also use their creative skills for an observation task. We will simulate an attack with paintballs in our purpose built training village, visit the WW2 tunnels and have a day of sports which will including completing a military basic fitness test.”

14 year old Kenneth Alvarez is hoping to follow his father, WO2 Kenny Alvarez, into the Regiment: “I want to take after my dad, not necessarily in the role he is doing at the moment but I am interested in intelligence including interrogation and working with the dog section” he said.

Whilst with the EOD team the boys were giving three Improvised Explosive Device (IED) scenarios. They were tasked with opening a car door, removing an IED from a bin and removing an IED from a covered area but could only use a hook and line to complete each task. The challenging teamwork gave them a real insight into the work of the EOD team and they also had the opportunity to operate the Cutlass EOD Robot.
