Sep 03 - Mons Calpe Head Coach Praises Performance Against Boavista

By Mark Viales in Porto

Mons Calpe head coach William Amaral de Andrade was buoyant at the performance levels of his team against professional Portuguese Primera outfit Boavista FC yesterday at the Estádio do Leça in Porto, Portugal.

The head coach praised an excellent first half where his players managed to keep the score level and also put pressure on the opposition in what was an even first half.

“The team managed to maintain its intensity against a very strong team at the top of the Portuguese league,” he said.

“We defended and attacked confidently as well as linking positive attacking transitions, not always at the correct level, but when you consider the long coach drive from Gibraltar, it is understandable.”

The head coach said his players were buying into his coaching techniques and style of play and believes his methodology is being absorbed by the players.

“This makes it easy for them to express themselves. Despite the short amount of time we have been together I am very happy with our preseason results thus far.”

Mons Calpe has enlisted a number of youngsters with great potential and, through patience and hard work, William feels they will reach the next level.

“I think that these players will be the future of Gibraltar football. If they are willing to train every day they will grow and will have the opportunity to contribute. I think that we are forming a big family and this is the way to push forward.”

William believes that a good campaign for the recently promoted side would be to maintain their status in Gibraltar’s Premier League, while still remaining competitive.

“Our principal objective is to feed players into the national side. We need to believe in them to help them achieve their dreams.”

BOAVISTA

Erwin Sánchez, Boavista head coach, was surprised by the tenacity and defensive grit as well as the attacking flair shown by Mons Calpe against his side.

“This is how good teams are formed, with work and dedication. It is not easy to find a competitive rhythm, but errors can easily be rectified following matches like these,” he said. “You can see the dynamic of the team. For us it was a great surprise and I encourage them to keep going in this way.”

Sánchez said that football in Gibraltar has improved in the last few years and believes this is due to competing at a higher level in European competitions.

“This is very good for your league. When you compete in important tournaments like the eliminatory rounds of European competition, it lifts the spirit of the country and football lovers. I understand that you really love football on the Rock and I think that in the not too distant future you will be competing at a good level. It is a beautiful thing in football.”
