Medal Success In Monaco For Special Olympics Swimmers

A team of six swimmers from Special Olympics Gibraltar represented Gibraltar at the Princess Charlene Special Olympics European Swimming Invitational Games in Monaco last weekend. 

A statement from Special Olympics Gibraltar follows below:

Competing against athletes from 27 other countries across Europe, the Gibraltar team brought home a remarkable haul of medals with 4 golds, 1 silver, and 3 bronzes.

The team, comprising athletes Ivan Mannion Gomez, Douglas Pitaluga, Adam Stewart, Glen Wimbleton, Sallyann Mauro, and Christopher Joyce, each competed in two races, putting forth inspiring performances that highlighted their hard work, dedication, and skill. Accompanying them were Swimming Coach Christine Bugeja and Head of Delegation Michael Mauro, whose leadership and support were invaluable throughout the competition.

The event began with divisioning heats on Saturday, followed by an opening ceremony at the breathtaking Stade Louis II Centre Nautique Albert II. All races took place on Sunday when the athletes gave it their all in exciting races against teams from across Europe. The weekend culminated in the presentation of the medals and a closing ceremony on Sunday evening.

Beyond the competition, the event offered athletes the chance to bond with fellow competitors, foster international friendships, and take in the sights of Monaco, underscoring the importance of the social and cultural experiences Special Olympics provides to its athletes. 

National Director Annie Risso said “We are incredibly proud of our athletes for their outstanding achievements at the Princess Charlene Special Olympics European Swimming Invitational Games. Their dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship shone through in every race. Beyond the medals, these events are about building friendships, growing confidence, and sharing the joy of sport with athletes from all over Europe. Congratulations to each athlete, and heartfelt thanks to our coaches and supporters who make these moments possible.”

The team will return to the Rock on Tuesday, October 29th.
