Special Olympics World Winter Games Finale

On the penultimate day of the Special Olympics World Winter games in Turin the Special Olympics Gibraltar (SOG) team had another highly successful day, making it already their most successful winter games yet despite the small number of athletes in the team.

A statement from Special Olympics Gibraltar follows below:

The snowshoeing event came to an end in style with Ryan Viagas earning a silver medal with a time of 19.51s in the 100m finals. In the same event Sallyann Mauro came 4th in her division with 42.02s and Merlin Florkowski was 7th in his division with 18.09s. Sallyann improved her PBs in both the 100m and 200m whilst Ryan improved his in the 100m and Merlin his in the 200m. Their results in the 100m on Friday followed the gold by Merlin and 7th places by Sallyann and Ryan on Thursday in the 200m.

On the slopes Francis Avellano performed well in his 2 divisioning runs in the novice slalom event and his prospects look good for the finals on Saturday though the weather may have an impact on that with heavy snow and poor visibility forecast all day. Both he and fellow skier Samuel Santos are still revelling in their gold medal achievements earlier in the week.

As the Games come to an end SOG can look back on a highly successful week with some great achievements from the Gibraltarian athletes in the incredibly picturesque region of Sestrierre. The team return to the Rock on Monday after a Sunday night stopover in London.
