Netball World Youth Cup 2025 – Gibraltar Event Team Completes Security Awareness Training in Partnership with the Royal Gibraltar Police

As preparations continue for the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 (NWYC2025), scheduled to take place from the 19th to 28th September 2025, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has strengthened its commitment to event safety in collaborating with the Royal Gibraltar Police, in the delivery of security awareness training in the form of the “See, Check and Notify” (SCaN) programme.
More than 60 individuals so far, including representatives from the NWYC2025 team, the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority, Visit Gibraltar, and contracted private security personnel, have so far taken part in the SCaN training programme delivered by Detective Constable Anthony Debono.
SCaN recognises that people are any businesses’ or organisation’s best advantage in helping prevent and tackle a range of threats including terrorism, criminal activity and unlawful protest. SCaN is designed to help businesses and organisations maximise safety and security, using their existing resources, so that staff and representatives learn how to spot suspicious activity, how to deter it and what to do when they encounter it. This training programme comprises various strands and was developed by the UK National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA). It can only be delivered by accredited Police Counter Terrorism Security Advisors.
Brian Brooks, Head of Security for NWYC2025, stated:
“This training supports our broader security approach. It helps ensure that all personnel are better equipped to communicate effectively and respond appropriately to security-related situations that may arise.”
DC Anthony Debono added:
“It was a privilege to deliver this training to such engaged audiences. Their commitment to creating a secure, safe and professional environment was clear throughout the sessions.”
The initiative represents a significant step forward in operational preparedness for NWYC2025 and sets a positive precedent for event security collaboration in Gibraltar. It also reinforces the tournament’s dedication to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants, staff, and visitors.
