Exhibition of Comics by Joseph Piñero Opens at GEMA Gallery

An exhibition of comics produced by Joseph (Pepe) Piñero opened yesterday evening at the GEMA gallery. 

The works are mainly based on humorous and memorable moments in his life—from a ride on a long tandem with his school friends while studying at university in England in the 1970s, to a fishing trip with friends after the COVID lockdown in 2020, the artist says that his works urge us to “carpe diem…and even grasp the moment”.  

Speaking at the launch, school friend and retired teacher Martin Gonzalez said: “What is it about Pepe that has led to what we have today? The answer to that is his sense of humour.”

He added: “Enjoy these works—it’s Pepe’s way of expressing himself and recording his life.”

Mr Piñero, addressing the guests, said he had been drawing comics since he was in school. He said the comics displayed “the funny side of life…life is always hard but you have to look at the funny side.”

Speaking to YGTV, Mr Piñero said: “I’ve wanted to do an exhibition for a long, long time. I have been inspired by Shane Dalmedo from the gallery and my friend Martin, and, at our age, time is of the essence so it was the right time to do this.” 

The exhibition runs for a week.
