Charles Montegriffo’s MBE Forfeited

The Government has noted that Charles Montegriffo’s MBE has been forfeited following the publication of a notice in the London Gazette. Montegriffo was formally notified of the decision by the Governor during a visit to HM Prison, accompanied by Justice Minister Nigel Feetham.
A statement from the Government follows below:
HM Government of Gibraltar notes that notice of the forfeiture of Charles Montegriffo’s MBE has now been published in the London Gazette on 1 October 2026, following consideration by the Honours Forfeiture Committee and on the recommendation of the Prime Minister to His Majesty The King.
Mr Montegriffo was appointed an MBE in the 2007 New Year Honours.
Following his guilty plea, conviction and sentence to 14 years’ imprisonment for sexual offences against children, the honour has now been cancelled and annulled and his name removed from the Register of the Order.
Mr Montegriffo was formally notified by His Excellency the Governor during a visit to HM Prison, accompanied by the Minister for Justice Nigel Feetham KC MP. He has since returned his insignia, which has been sent to Buckingham Palace, and he may no longer use the post-nominal letters MBE.
Minister for Justice Nigel Feetham KC MP said: “The protection of victims and the public must remain our absolute priority. An honour carries with it a responsibility to uphold the standards expected of those who receive it.”
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said: “This decision reflects the seriousness with which we regard offences against children and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the honours system. Our thoughts remain with the victims.”
