Volunteers Still Needed For Gibraltar Clean-Up

The ESG says volunteers are still needed for this year’s Global Clean-Up on 19th September, with 30 sites across Gibraltar set to take part.

Anyone wanting to get involved has until 9th September to sign up.

A statement from the ESG follows below:

We are now a little under 2 weeks away from this year’s Global Clean up event on the 19th  of September. 30 sites will see 27 teams and supporters tackle difficult to access areas and  important habitats in Gibraltar. Once again schools, clubs, businesses, specialists, agencies,  departments and members of the community have stepped up to help in this important  campaign. We can always take on a few more volunteers who must get in contact by the 9th  of September. 

A few areas will see collaborative effort from keen volunteers, supported by industry,  specialists and services where cliffs, coastal areas, underwater, green and urban sites will  receive attention. 

Organisers see the campaign as essential in raising awareness and promoting civic pride. Our  world unfortunately continues to see a massive rise in the consumption of all kinds of short lived, disposable waste, which does not always find its way into bins, instead, creating  Gibraltar eyesores and threatening our wildlife on land and sea. Worth mentioning too the  alarming impacts on our sewage system and drains from the continued flushing of wipes which  needs to stop. 

This effort also highlights the urgent need for a modern waste facility, which is now taking the  first steps towards being a reality. We believe until then that it calls for clearer information and  advice as to where the citizen and business should be responsibly disposing of their waste.  Apart from online, this info should be posted in busy public areas such as libraries,  supermarkets, sports facilities, schools etc. as a daily reminder and the community actively  encouraged to make use of these facilities. 

CUTW Gibraltar believes that clear information and improved facilities will help, but they must  be supported by visible enforcement against littering and fly-tipping, with consequences for  this anti-social behaviour. Significant effort and resources are spent cleaning up after others; surely more should be invested in preventing the problem? 

CUTW 2026 will be our 22nd year running in Gibraltar.
