May 19 - GWMF 2016: Obrigado! Gibraltar Celebrates The Carnival In June
The Gibraltar World Music Festival is organizing an event at Casemates Square for the afternoon of the 22nd June called ‘Rio Carnival’. The event will give an opportunity to Gibraltar to discover Brazilian culture. With this objective, the GWMF is preparing a fancy dress competition and invites the public to participate and demonstrate its creativity. Towards the end of the event, the jury will select the best three participants who will receive an award.
The idea is to recreate the spirit of the Rio Carnival in the heart of Gibraltar. The Rio Carnival is not only the biggest carnival in the world but also a benchmark against which every other carnival is compared. It is considered one of the most interesting artistic events on the globe. During this event people will have a chance to dance, sing, party and have an overdose of fun and so the path from John Mackintosh Square to Casemates Square will become the famous ‘Sambodromo’.
Ferva Brasil dancers will put the colours of Brazil in the streets and drummers will create the authentic sounds of Brazil to invite to the public to participate in the Samba Parade. Rio Carnival will also have the participation of Mestre Pena, from Grupo Abalô Capoeira and Professor Parafina, from Capoeira Marbella who will give a chance to the attendees to learn about this Brazilian martial art from two of the best Masters in the region.
Loreto Convent School choir together with Gibraltar Academy of Dance, Sotogrande International School, Danza Academy of Gibraltar, Zumba with B and the Centro de Arte Flamenco David Morales, together with other local bands, will also participate in this street party.
Several tents with food, drinks, handcrafts and workshops will be located at John Mackintosh Square and Casemates from 19.00 to 23.00. This event will give Gibraltar the opportunity to express its own vision of the Lusophone culture and the Brazilian one in particular. Children and adults mentioned above will perform an artistic piece of the choice based on the theme ‘Obrigado!’
The organisers say that most of the restaurants at Casemates Square will remain open late for this occasion and invite everyone to book their table for the night now.
The musical program will include several concerts such as the performance of Carmen Souza and Theo Passcal, one of the new generation singers to continue the successful path of the Cape Verdean music. Carmen Souza sings in her native creole dialect with an intimacy, sensuality, and vivacity, characterized by a tremendous lightness of touch. Her music has a deceptive simplicity, a rare clarity, derived from a unique mix of influences from her Cape Verdean background to jazz and modern soul creating this beautifully vibrant, largely acoustic, accessible hybrid World soul music for the 21st century.
‘Come to my home’ is a collective artistic event initiated by Driss Alaoui Mdaghri, former Minister in Morocco and a very active figure in civil society. The project will mix arts, cultures and nationalities. It is based on the principles of freedom, collaborative creativity, mixing and creative dialogue of cultures, the cardinal values of the World Cultures Foundation.
This year’s World Music programme is delivered to the people of Gibraltar under the patronage of the Chief Minister and will be sponsored by the Government of Gibraltar, the Parasol Foundation, Kusuma Trust, JYSKE Bank, SG Hambros Bank (Gibraltar) Limited, Hyperion, Deloitte, Cuca Beer, Hassans, Gibtelecom, Margaux Philantrhopy, EMID Gibraltar, Camara Municipal de Lisboa, Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa and the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel.
Concerts at St. Michael’s Cave
Gibraltar Productions reminds the public that tickets for Gibraltar World Music Festival 2016 ‘Obrigado!’ for Thursday 23rd June at St. Michael’s Cave are available at 92 Irish Town at the price of £30 (General Public) and £25 (Senior Citizens and Students).
Ticket prices include free Shuttle Service to and from the St. Michael’s Cave. The pick up will start at 19.00 from the Coach Park. Tickets must be displayed to allow entry to the St. Michael’s Cave and to board the shuttles.
The concerts will begin with the Cape Verdean musician Carmen Souza together with Theo Pas'cal. Marcio Faraco will be on stage next with his personal style gliding from samba to bossa nova, studded with inflections of jazz. Last but not least the night will finish with Carminho. She was born and raised in the midst of Fado and this is why it is as natural to her as breathing.
