Jul 22 - Comic-Con International 2013
Yesterday evening marked the final day of the increasingly popular Comic-con event that pulls in thousands of visitors every year. Now, a convention centered predominantly around a love of comic books, sci-fi and video game characters is generally more catered towards the international nerds of society, however, with the growing international acceptance of the five day convention, it seems to now cater for a spectrum of individuals with differing interests.
For example a number of famed television shows present their casts annually at Comic-Con International, in order to carry out press conferences and seminars releasing teasers from new seasons. Doctor Who Celebrated its 50th anniversary at the event, with current Doctor Matt Smith detailing his departure from the show. Other series present at the event were the casts of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, which has proved a cult classic among fans. The convention also acts as a platform for up-coming films to exhibit their casts and answer fans’ questions.
Now, one almost mandatory aspect of attending Comic-Con is doing so in fancy dress. The convention is famed for its selection of overly accurate super hero, video game, and anime character doubles.
The inaugural Comic-Con event was hosted in 1970 after a selection of comic book, movie an science fiction fans ‘banded together to put on the first comic book convention in southern California.’
The Comic-Con website states that attendance in recent years has topped 130,000. Regular features include a giant Exhibition Hall, an extensive programming schedule that incorporates anime and film screenings, as well as previews of up-coming games set for release.
