Mar 07 - GSD Probes Government Further on Housing Policy

gsdThe Government is looking to the past to criticise the Opposition once again, the GSD claims. The party has questioned the administration on how the Government intends to house those on the Housing List, as they promised to do during their first tenure in office.

The Opposition notes that as of 8 December 2011 there were approximately 1,400 people on the housing lists, that figure increased to a staggering 2,427 as at the 31st January 2014 representing an increase of approximately 57% in the two years that the GSLP have occupied No.6.  The Government say that they have housed 400 people out of the 1400 that they committed to housing in their manifesto; this is also welcomed.

The Opposition has expressed serious concerns regarding whether the remaining 1000 on the housing list from 8 December 2011 will be able to participate in new affordable housing projects. They call on the Government to be clear on how it intends to deal with the over 1400 applicants on the Housing Lists that have applied since the GSLP took office.

GSD spokesperson Elliott Phillips insists the Government has failed to answer the party’s questions. He adds, ‘we are disappointed that the Government has failed to once again answer the questions asked and has instead chosen to deflect attention away from the concerns expressed. We again call on the Government to be clear on its housing policy and answer how the Government intends to deal with (1) over 2400 people on the housing list and pre list, (2) social and medical applicants and (3) those that have been living across the border and wish to return home.’
