Addressing the United Nations Fourth Committee yesterday in New York Chief Minister Fabian Picardo touched upon the notable 50th anniversary of former Chief Minister Sir Joshua Hassan’s speech to the Committee of twenty four, on the same issue, decolonisation.
Mr. Picardo was joined by Ministers Gilbert Licudi and Dr. Joseph Garcia, as well as a selection of A Level students, who he insisted, were chosen to attend the meeting because of their interest in the importance of the work of the United Nations.
During his time in the US, Mr. PIcardo has met with the Council of Foreign Affairs in order to further spread Gibraltar’s message…
KUPCHAN: Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Charlie Kupchan. I'm a senior fellow here at CFR and I'm delighted to welcome all of you to our discussion this afternoon. Thanks for braving the weather and putting on your flippers and your snorkels to come out today. Before we start, let me remind everyone to turn off your devices, because it can interfere with the microphones. In fact, you need to turn them off, deactivate them and destroy them. Those are the new council rules.
This morning,Chief Minister Fabian Picardo made a presentation to the US National Press Club, in Washington DC on why Gibraltar matters to the United States. Mr. Picardo’s speech, in its entirety, is as follows:
The GSD asks that the Government confirm that none of the £30 million lent to the owners of the Sunborn by Credit Finance Company Limited will be used to pay for any debts owed by the owners of that vessel in a foreign jurisdiction. This follows reports in the international press that the owners of the Sunborn Hotel owe the ‘ayuntamiento’ in Barcelona Euro 1.6 million.
It will be recalled that Credit Finance Company Limited was only able to provide that loan because it was provided with over £307 million of savers’ money from the proceeds of debentures from the Gibraltar Savings Bank. The Opposition believes it would not be right for any of that money to end up going to pay for debts owed outside Gibraltar.
The Opposition is also asking the Government whether any further sums have been loaned to the owners of the Sunborn since the Chief Minister revealed the day after the by-election that £30 million had been lent to them.
This morning, Environment Minister Dr John Cortes welcomed a delegation of local and Overseas Territories representatives to a conference discussing Geographical Information Systems in UK Overseas Territories.
Highlighting the significance of GIS, Dr. Cortes insisted that mapping had been around for centuries, with the practice of using maps to understand spatial patterns not covering anything new. He added that GIS plays a critical role in the management of both the natural and urban environment, and benefits organizations of all sizes both in the private and public sector.
