Feb 01 - Minister Sacramento Visits Tradewise Chess Festival

Samantha Sacramento, Gibraltar’s Minister for Tourism, visited the Tradewise Chess Festival 2016 on Friday afternoon as it entered its fourth round at the Caleta Hotel.

Commenting on its success in an interview on the Festival website with Tournament Director Stuart Conquest, she said the Festival was evidence of  “the capacity that we have to build upon it year on year”.

“Its success as a festival,” she said complimenting the organisers on the work undertaken each year, “helps us put Gibraltar on the map. With this festival we can incorporate Gibraltar as a destination to complement the fantastic tournament that we have.”

SUNBORN FESTIVAL OPENING DINNER

Earlier in the week she had hosted the opening dinner of the Festival at the Sunborn Hotel. In her address to the 250 strong gathering from 58 countries, Ms Sacramento called on them all to spread the word about both Gibraltar Plc. and the tournament itself around the world.

"We would ask you to not only go onto the social media pages but also the official tourist board pages - we have our #VisitGibraltar for the festival and Gibraltar and we ask you to share this information because we want to encourage more people to come to Gibraltar and to this tournament,” she said.

Paying tribute to its creator and organiser Brian Callaghan, she recognised that the tournament just got bigger and better every year.

Visitors old and new, said Ms Sacramento, would no doubt agree that Gibraltar was one of the most spectacular settings in the world to stage a competition such as the Tradewise Chess Festival: “We can make it even better and bigger next year with your help.”

Her message was clear: "We want you to keep coming back, with your family and friends.”
