The Gibraltar CIPD branch will be holding a session on their viewpoint on sex discrimination and employment.

The event will be held on Thursday 7th March 2019 between 1pm and 2.30pm, with guest speaker Katerina Rudiger, the CIPD’s Chief Community Officer at Isolas LLP, Portland House Glacis Road.

A statement from Gibraltar's CIPD branch follows below:

Katerina develops and manages the delivery of the CIPD’s strategy towards its volunteer workforce, community affairs, corporate social responsibility activities and the voluntary sector. She leads on driving the CIPD’s presence in the charitable space and delivery on the CIPD’s purpose of championing better work and working lives. Her department runs the CIPD’s volunteering programmes, including the Steps Ahead mentoring programme, which matches HR volunteers with jobseekers for face to face mentoring around labour market access and employability skills. Previously, Katerina headed up the CIPD’s policy campaigns department and led on the CIPD’s work on youth unemployment, developing the CIPD’s Learning to Work programme.

Although sex discrimination has been illegal for more than 30 years, we know it is still an issue. Sexual harassment at work, pregnancy and maternity discrimination are serious problems employers must tackle.  Although there has been progress, there is still a long way to go until we can claim equality of opportunity on the basis of sex.

Statistics show that nearly 2 in 3 young women have experienced sexual harassment at work, 40% of women have experienced some form of sexual harassment in the workplace and  younger women aged 18-34 are most at risk of sexual harassment with 43% having experienced it.

A debate around sexual harassment in the workplace and a recognition that this is a problem, with guidance towards solutions and actions employers can take to ensure all employees are treated with respect and dignity, including:

• Setting the scene around the changing labour market & gender
• The power balance
• Stats around sexual harassment and how it is seen as the 'norm'
• Where workplaces/HR are getting it wrong in terms of recognising and acting on it
• Need for change through:

- HR and reporting practices

- Culture change from the top

- The business case for more diverse leadership

- Practical tools & interventions
