Rebecca Calderon To Launch Illustrated Map Of Upper Town At Gibraltar Heritage Trust

A new illustrated map of the Upper Town will be launched by Rebecca Calderon on Wednesday at the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.

A new illustrated map of the upper town of Gibraltar will be launched on Wednesday evening at the Gibraltar Heritage Trust. Rebecca Calderon, the map’s creator, will be giving a presentation explaining why she decided to embark on the project and how it was a labour of love and a combined family effort.

“As a user of paper maps, I noticed there wasn’t one which zoomed in on the little passageways and lanes in our old town, not even Google maps are clear as to what is a dead end or not, it is very easy for people to get lost or miss things” explained Mrs. Calderon. 

Using satellite information and handwritten notes and photographs gathered on field trips in the area she created a map inspired by a vintage ‘Monument Map’ of Paris. Rebecca’s father, painter David Staunton Browne, then added his artistic detail to the map with the final digitalisation stage carried out by Rebecca’s daughter Trevelayne Faller. 

The presentation is a free event starting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 8th October.

Maps will be on sale at the Heritage Trust Shop @ £2 each.
