Fourth Gibraltar International Conference Opens in Cádiz

The fourth Gibraltar International Conference is currently being held at the University of Cádiz.
The event sees postgraduates, Gibraltarian writers, and academics with an interest in Gibraltar’s languages and literature come together to discuss the Rock’s history, culture, writing and linguistic landscape over two days.
Previous editions were held in Cambridge (2023), Vigo (2024) and Basel (2025).
Yesterday’s lectures started with a plenary session by Professor Elena Seoane, University of Vigo, who spoke about language erasure and literary invisibility in Gibraltar.
M.G. Sanchez then launched his latest collection of stories, Lowlife Tales, together with Professor Rafael Vélez who is part of the conference organising committee.
Lectures on the poetry of Jackie Anderson and Giordano Durante were also delivered yesterday morning while parallel sessions by linguists (including Gibraltarian John Manuel Enriles) examined language shift, multilingualism and code-switching.
In the afternoon session, Dominic Francis Lopez, John Calderon, Dr Ryan Asquez, Rebecca Calderon, Anna Macdonald and Trino Cruz delivered presentations.
Today, the main focus of the literature lectures will be on the work of M. G. Sanchez and Humbert Hernandez.
