Bloomsday Celebrations Conclude With Play And Music in La Línea

Following Tuesday morning’s Bloomsday celebrations in the Alameda Gardens, BookGem and The Clipper, festivities resumed that evening at the Museo Cruz Herrera in La Línea with a performance of “¡A Mariana No Se Le Miente!” By Rebecca Calderon, a sequel to her earlier Bloomsday play. The performance introduced Spanish characters in a lively new production.
The play tells the story of Esteban, a young man from La Línea, and his girlfriend Mariana, originally from Galicia, who travel to Dublin to celebrate Bloomsday.
However, Esteban is keeping a secret and needs the help of someone who knows James Joyce and Ulysses, so he enters Turlough O'Toole's bookstore, and that’s where a fascinating adventure starts.
The actors on Tuesday evening were: Robert Donohoe, Adrian Higuera Garcia, Nerea Leis, Oliver Gottmann and Barbara Durante
The La Línea Ayuntamiento councillor with responsibility for culture, Raquel Ñeco, introduced the show with a speech about how valuable it was for Gibraltar and La Línea to collaborate. She added that a new Molly Bloom statue would soon be erected in the Plaza de Toros, serving to emphasise the importance of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses to the area.
Bloomsday concluded at the Molly Bloom pub with traditional Irish ballads with pianist Stephen ffrench Davis.
