Feb 27 - Minister Cortes Pays Red Cross a Visit
Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, recently paid a visit to the local branch of the Red Cross to learn and explore the various services they provide. ‘I feel I should be aware of all aspects of health provision within Gibraltar and not just those provided by the GHA,’ noted the Minister. ‘I am also a great believer in the value of the work done by the voluntary sector.’
Dr. Cortes was briefed by Eddie Davies, the Chairman, Edgar Lavarello, the Treasurer and Pat Dalli, the Welfare Officer. He also met volunteers George Martin and Francis Duran.
‘We have over 340 wheelchairs for use by hospital out-patients and tourists,’ explained Eddie Davies. ‘We also lend out commodes and “strollers.” We also have a car which takes people with mobility problems to hospital for their appointments.’
Edgar Lavarello explained that the organisation’s income was a mixture of Government subsidy, income from Flag Days and donations from the users of the equipment. ‘We take in £40,000 a year and we spend £40,000 a year,’ explained Edgar. ‘And we don’t waste a penny,’ added Pat Dalli. ‘People like to know exactly where their money goes.’
