Apr 04 - New Government Chief Technical Officer Appointed

hector montado The Government’s Chief Technical Officer, Mr Michael Gil recent retired after 11 years in post. The Government thanked Mr. Gil for his ‘invaluable contribution to the Public Service’, with years as a Graduate Civil Engineer within the Public Works Department.

Mr Gil has overseen numerous key projects including plans for the new Power Station, new Waste Treatment Plant, new Waste Water Treatment Plant, the transfer of MOD assets and subsequent provision of services to the MOD as well as on transposition and implementation of EU directives on the Environment. During his time in the post, he has been Director, Chairman and board member of various statutory and government entities.

Mr. Hector Montado, current CEO of the Technical Services Department, has been chosen to succeed Mr. Gil as Chief Technical Officer. He joined the Public Works Department in 1986 and furthered his Civil and Structural Engineering career in the Department of Trade & Industry. His vast experience at senior managerial level is evidenced by the fifteen years he has spent at the Technical Services Department, the last ten of which have been as its CEO.

Commenting on Michael Gil’s retirement, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said that ‘he has been a brilliant help to me, as much as he will have been to all other ministers who may have had the pleasure of working with him in the many years he has served Gibraltar.’

He also welcomed Hector Montado as Chief Technical Officer commenting, ‘Hector knows he has big shoes to fill, but he is eminently well qualified to fulfil this challenging role and to bring to it the many qualities and personal attributes that characterise him. Having also worked with him these past two years in his previous post, I am confident that he is the right person to be the Government’s new Chief Technical Officer.’
