Feb 11 - Five Winter Essentials For The Modern Man Or Woman Or Child

By Stefano Blanca Sciacaluga (Down to earth Style Guru)

I quite like fashion. I like clothes and I like to think I know a thing or two, you know? Like, I'll wake up in the morning and take a peek out the window and I immediately know what's up, I'll immediately start going through my mental catalog of the clothes in my wardrobe and my mental catalog of male stand up comedians; because somewhere in my development as an adult I have ended up dressing like a stand up comedian. I don't know. But I get that right, for sure. I know not to go too crazy on the colours but also know not to dress like Dungeons and Dragons is my life. In fact, I don't own any fleece tops so I'm in the clear on that one.

So anyway, I reckon I should get to the point right about now. So if you know me, you know me, and if you know me you'll know I like the winter a lot. So much so that I have decided to give you this run-down of winter essentials that everybody should have in their wardrobe and outside of it (like on the floor, where I find my clothes the day after a night out).

1. A good jacket with pockets on the sides for you hands

Because having to walk with your hands out isn't really the most pleasant of things; I mean, the only good thing about having your hands out is that in the case that you fall over (like I do because I'm a clumsy human) you can stop yourself with your hands. But other than that there's really nothing good about having your paws out (unless you have big rings or something). So a big coat is a must really, especially if the hands go in round the sides and not round the top, you feel?

Pro: if it's cold enough to do it up and you're gonna spend most of your time outdoors nobody will see what you are wearing so you can literally wear anything and nobody will see what you are wearing underneath.

Con: in Gibraltar it's rarely cold enough to do it now and especially not in this mild winter, but I don't know, things could be worse, you know?

2. A good pair of shoes

If you can find a good pair of water-resistant shoes please tell me. I never have the right footwear and my toes are always cold in the winter, especially when it's raining because then they are cold and rained all over and the inside. No es bueno. But deep inside I know that the best thing for the winter and an absolute essential would be a good pair of shoes. If they're not comfortable they are not good, if they are comfortable they are good, and if you are in zero risk of trench foot even better!

Pro: no trench foot

Con: sometimes with things like boots I feel my feet are a little bulky and I feel like I'm wearing clown shoes even though my feet are very normal size (size eight or something if you must know, that's a 42 in Europe)

3. Some good trackie trousers

Because a good pair of trackies is really the way forward. I even recently made a huge discovery in this whole trackie business, and because I'm a man in tune with the times I will explain what I have learnt. I have been a trackies user for years but have always kept them to the privacy of the home, because butts need to be somewhat supported and I've never felt my booty gets given the right amount of attention it needs in trackies. But because life is too short I have recently started wearing them for things like popping out a second, or two, or a few hours, to make music with my band, where we collectively agreed on the comfort of trackie bottoms and are now holding trackie gatherings in a sweaty smelly basement in this city. Now I'm not going to tell you how to wear them because that's up to you but let me give you this bit of advice that works excellently in the cold winter months: tuck it all in. Your trackies in your socks, your top in your trackies and even that hoodie for good measure. Best way to watch television or whatever you enjoy doing on a quiet evening.

Pro: ultimate comfort. It will change your outlook on life.

Con: maybe your butt looks weird in them, I'd have to have a look and let you know.

4. "I've got a blanket space baby, and I'll write your name (on the blanket space)"

Swifty said it! Now we're getting serious. Now we're really talking, can you hear me? Good. It's all about blanket. No, not Michael Jackson's son, I'm talking about those fabric squares that are just perfect when you're in your chill zone getting your chill on in the living room on the sofa. Essential fashion item for anybody this winter, and the last one and I really hope the next one too. I can't get enough of a good blanket and you shouldn't be able to either. Funny thing is I don't even know who makes blankets, you know? Like my mum got some from somewhere and gave me one. I have this new one with the fleece on the one side and the solid brown on the other, but then I also have this plaid one and it's beautiful and warm.

Pro: you are guaranteed to be nice and warm and feeling really toasty when you're watching Storage Wars.

Con: if you're big like I just so happen to be it is very easy to end up with your feet or something popping out the bottom. Remember: tuck everything in.

5. A quilt or duvet bigger than you and bigger than your bed needs

I said it's all about the blanket but when you're not on the sofa it's nice to be in the bed and what better way to be in the bed than being warm in the bed, you feel me? I feel me and I feel me warm, because I have a really big duvet (pronounced doo-vey, don't be a hooligan, pronounced like the Hogan in Hulk Hogan but a little different). So make sure you get a really big one is what I'm saying; you bet I feel like a king under my king's quilt!

Pro: it's very, very good. And if you get a good quilt you won't feel the cold even if you are in the nude underneath.

Con: a lot of people all over the world are very addicted to the quilt and the bed and it's a serious thing that affects hundreds of lives a day.

Thank you and I hope you enjoyed my winter warmer fashion tips!
