Gibraltar, Vying for the title of the most expensive City in the World

A news story I read this morning cited Luanda, the capital of Angola as the world’s most expensive city. With a kilo of imported tomatoes costing $16 and $45 for a kilo of beef. Renting an apartment one person said was costing him $5000. The main reason being quoted was “that everything has to be imported”.

In Gibraltar as far as foods are concerned, I do find them relatively expensive especially at Morrisons. Yesterday for example I paid £6.00 for a 200g fillet steak multiply that by five for a Kilo and it gives you £30 for a kilo of beef, A bit more maths now will take me to my point. £30 exchanged into Dollars is $47.52 can you see where I am going with this, sure you can.

Most people in the street will tell you that things in Morrisons are expensive because they have to be imported from the UK. I am pretty sure that Morrisons inability to keep prices down are more due to the fact that there is no competition and Morrisons can do what they want.

Unfortunately while the prices of consumables go up in Gibraltar, the wages of Joe average seem to lag behind like an asthmatic Grandparent, never quite catching up.

Well, unless you are a member of the Future Job Strategy as stated in Gibraltar News yesterday, As Joe Bossano Quoted to the 500 “you will get a pay rise”.
