May 05 - Gibraltar Spies Help Smash Suspect ISIS Recruiting Cell In Spain
Four terror suspects were arrested near Madrid on Tuesday following intelligence received from British spies stationed in Gibraltar.
According to an article on the Mirror website, this is the second time the GCHQ base on the Rock has helped smash a suspected ISIS recruiting cell in Spain in a fortnight.
Security services at the intelligence base identified the gang after they sent thousands of propaganda messages through various websites.
The terror suspects were said to have used internet chat rooms and messaging apps to recruit Islamic radicals to brainwash them into launching deadly attacks on popular tourist spots such as the Costa del Sol this summer.
Security services feared the gang had already developed a following of “hundreds of people”.
The GCHQ listening post picked up vital intelligence from North Africa and across the Mediterranean, raising fears of an “imminent threat” on the Spanish coasts.
Armed Guardia Civil officers launched coordinated dawn raids in the towns of Cempozuelos and Pinto near Madrid on Tuesday morning, and arrested three Moroccan nationals and one Spanish national who remain in custody.
