Jul 05 - Further GDP Dog Handlers Complete Training
Two further Gibraltar Defence Police dog handlers have just completed their training, bringing the Force’s patrol dog section into full operation. PCs Brandon Avellano and ‘Scotty’ Diani are now part of the six-strong team following their successful completion of an intensive 9 week course delivered by Sergeant Andy Gaunt, who is currently seconded to the GDP from the UK.
Sergeant Gaunt said, ‘I have been very impressed by the enthusiasm and ability of these two officers. They have responded well to the training and are now fully accredited police dog handlers.’
During their training the officers formed a loose bond with their dogs. They received instruction in animal psychology and welfare together with specific training in relation to use of force and suspect handling. The training is designed to ensure that the dog teams operate with due regard for human rights.
Visitors to the recent GDP Open Day may remember seeing both officers in action during the dog display, with PC Diani playing the role of the villain.
Chief Police Officer Rob Allen said, ‘I am delighted to welcome these latest two officers into the dog section. They join a valued team that has already proved its operational effectiveness in the short time it has been operational.’
