Gibraltar NASUWT Welcomes Public Sector Pay Increases
Gibraltar NASUWT have issued a statement regarding the Chief Minister's Budget comments on public sector pay increases.

A statement from Gibraltar NASUWT follows below:

Gibraltar NASUWT welcomes today’s announcement by the Chief Minister regarding public sector pay increases. We recognise the considerable efforts made by the government in delivering a measured and responsible level of increment that meaningfully addresses the significant cost of living pressures our members, and the wider public sector workforce, have faced in recent years.

In the context of continued economic uncertainty, particularly with the European treaty still pending ratification, the approach taken is both generous and prudent. We commend the Chief Minister for delivering what is arguably the most progressive and socially responsible budget possible under the current political and economic circumstances.

We particularly welcome the clear focus on ensuring that those on lower salaries within the public sector benefit the most. This reflects a commitment to fairness and equity that Gibraltar NASUWT advocated for during official discussions between the government and the three main unions.

While this is an important and positive step toward restoring the real-terms erosion of income that has occurred since 2019, we remain mindful of the ongoing challenges that Gibraltar faces. Striking the right balance between supporting workers today and safeguarding the economic wellbeing of future generations is critical, and we believe this budget moves in that direction.

Gibraltar NASUWT views today’s announcement as a constructive step forward for our members and for public sector workers more broadly. At the same time, we remain clear in our view that further progress is needed on the long-standing issue of introducing a meaningful, progressive increase in the cap of the Superannuation contributory pension scheme. This is essential to ensure that workers’ contributions translate into a more adequate pension, ultimately promoting better financial security and dignity in retirement for public sector employees.

We welcome today’s progress and look forward to continuing to engage with the government to ensure that this momentum is maintained as the wider political picture becomes clearer.'
