RGP Warns Of Fake INTERPOL Emails

The RGP is warning the public about scam emails falsely claiming to be from INTERPOL and accusing recipients of serious criminal offences.

The emails often demand a response within 72 hours. The RGP advises people not to reply, click links or open attachments, and to report the emails to police.

A statement from the RGP follows below:

The Royal Gibraltar Police are warning the public that emails falsely claiming to be  official communications from the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) are currently being received by members of our community.

The messages use INTERPOL's name and logo to appear legitimate and accuse the  recipient of having committed serious criminal offences. The email typically instructs  the recipient to respond within a short deadline (often 72 hours), and pressure the  recipient of the email to reply directly to the sender’s address with “personal  justifications” in relation to the criminal activity the recipient of the email is accused of  having committed.

This type of email is one of several types of scams that target members of our  community from time to time, and is in no way a genuine communication from  INTERPOL or any other law enforcement agency.

INTERPOL does not investigate individuals or issue legal notices in this manner.  Genuine law enforcement action is never initiated through unsolicited emails  demanding a personal response within a fixed deadline, and legitimate law  enforcement agencies do not request payment, personal justification, or private  information via email in this way.

If in receipt of an email of this nature, the advice is:

∙ Do NOT reply to it.

∙ Do NOT click any links or open any attachments within the email. ∙ Do NOT send any personal information, money, or "justifications." ∙ Report the matter to the RGP.

∙ Block and delete the sender.

∙ Share awareness of this scam with anyone who may be particularly vulnerable  of becoming a victim to this type of crime.
