Oct 23 - Gibraltar Productions Produces Mor Karbasi’s New Album
Gibraltar Productions - the World Music Management Company based in Gibraltar - together with Mor&Co Ltd, has produced the new album of Mor Karbasi: ‘La Tsadika’. This CD reveals to the public a charismatic artist and shows a singer with an emotional way of feeling music steeped in history. The third album of this artist (after ‘The beauty and the sea’ in 2008 and ‘Daughter of the spring’ in 2011) is a tribute to Sol Hatchuel, a Moroccan Jewish heroine, beheaded in 1834 at the age of 17 years.
The new CD was launched to the world in a concert performed in Paris in which the public could test the strength of Mor Karbasi on stage, capturing the audience with her gorgeous, exceptional voice.
This album, produced by Gibraltar Productions, has been attended by Tom Cohen in the musical arrangements and features musicians like Joe Taylor (guitars), Itamar Doari (percussions), Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Mark Eliyahu (kamanche). Mor Karbasi, who now is living in Seville after a stay in London for several years, is now closer to her roots in the Pearl of Andalusia and with this new CD presents new adaptions of traditional Ladino and three original compositions.
‘La Tsadika’ has a mighty vibrato that grips the audience from start to finish, with the high clear voice of Mor Karbasi and an unparalleled vehemence, accompanied with arrangements of fado, flamenco and jazz. So, the CD carries the torch of tradition above the centuries, with heart and an overwhelming voice. Borrowing the aesthetic of Andalusian, Arab and Fado singers, she moulds with emphasis and intelligence the old Sephardic songs. Mor Karbasi merges with an enveloping force in this album flamenco rhythms, the eloquence of fado, the eastern ranges and the language of her ancestors.
In fact, ‘La Tsadika’ has been placed in the top 20 of the World Music albums best sellers in one week in France and is one of the most important developments in the music business.
The French press (Libération, Telérama, Mondomi) has said that the former Spanish romances included in the CD speak about flowery orchards and that the voice of Mor Karbasi with the intonations of Fado singers goes from natural ancestral songs to contemporary creations, with the addition of a flamenco guitar.
About Mor Karbasi
She was born April 23, 1986 in Jerusalem, to a mother from Nazareth of Moroccan descent and a father from Jerusalem of Persian (Iranian) ancestry. Mor is a young woman whose music is influenced by several cultures, though mainly by her Jewish heritage. A child with parents like hers no doubt carries a great deal of cultural richness. As already mentioned, she has Jewish influences, but also Persian, Moroccan, Spanish and, of course, Israeli. All of this is discernable in her outward appearance, but also in her lovely, effervescent music and many stories.
She has been ranked alongside such globally renowned singers as Mariza, Yasmin Levy and Estrella Morente - a splendid comparison, but one that does not describe her unique style of singing and compositions that breathe new life into an ancient language. Karbasi has already performed in several countries: Italy, Great Britain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, Spain, France, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey and Morocco as well as the United States and South America, always to great popular acclaim.
For example, The Guardian has said about Mor that she is “one of the great young divas of the global music scene” and the magazine Froots has highlighted that she owns a “wonderful voice - a truly expressive, electrifying instrument with a huge but superbly controlled rage of tones, decorations and expression.”
