Apr 07 - GSD Calls On Government To Open Alzheimer’s And Dementia Care Centre To Ease Strain On Hospital Beds

The GSD has called on the Government to provide the community with a final deadline and commitment for the completion of the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Centre, which the party says was promised to be ready in 2015.

A statement from the party continued: “It appears that the strain on hospital beds is chiefly down to this delay, a delay which could have been avoided, given that the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Centre was actually ready by the end of the last GSD administration in 2011, but was stopped by the present administration in order to make modifications.

“The domino effect of this colossal delay, one which is hard to justify after an inexplicable five year wait, puts into question Government priorities and when you put things in perspective and you see how a magnificently palatial new Number Six building was refurbished and completed in a three year period, it is incredible that this strain on hospital beds, a crucial and vital aspect of our community life, is going on.”

Shadow Minister for Health, Marlene Hassan Nahon, said: “There can be no good reason for the strain on hospital beds at present, when it is largely due to the bottleneck as a result of the delay of the completion of the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Centre. It will be having the double negative impact of affecting quality of care for hospital patients as well as a reduced standard of care for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients who could have had their own purpose built facilities a good few years ago. The timeline by which any neutral observer could reasonably be convinced that delay is in any way the GSD’s fault expired a long time ago. It would be embarrassing for the Government to use that excuse now. We call on Government to give us a final date for the opening of this centre and keep to it.”
