Oct 06 - GSD Accuses The Government Of Failing To Work Together On Brexit

The GSD accuses the Government of dishonest spin on the issue of Brexit, adding that it is the Government that has to lead on its call for unity but has failed to do so in over three months by excluding the GSD from everything.

A statement from the Opposition reads: "It is the Government that is playing party politics, as it does with everything.

"The call for unity came from the Government and it was accepted by the Opposition. The Government have failed to deliver on it. The Government’s suggestion that informing the Opposition could damage Gibraltar’s wider interest is despicable and not worthy of further comment.

"The GSD has repeated that it “will continue to strive to work with the Government for what will hopefully be a satisfactory outcome from Brexit.”

"The issue is not that the GSD should be provided with a “blow-by-blow account”. The issue is that the Government seems to be making it up as it goes along despite talk by Mr Picardo of a so called 'Master Plan'. Certainly the Opposition is completely in the dark despite calls from the Government for unity.

"To date all that the people have had from Mr Picardo is rhetoric and photographs. Brexit is a significant threat to Gibraltar. It is a threat that has been made worse by the huge increase in public debt and public spending over the past four years. It nonetheless requires some unity between Government and Opposition.

"The blame, however, for any lack of unity falls squarely on the shoulders of the Government. The Government leads but leading means that it shoulders the responsibility of where it leads Gibraltar to."
