Gibraltar Liberals In European Congress
10 October 2024

A delegation from the Liberal Party of Gibraltar joined over five hundred liberals from all over Europe in Estoril (Portugal) at the Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe ALDE.
A statement from the Liberal Party of Gibraltar follows below:
The Gibraltar Liberals are a long standing affiliate member of ALDE, which also includes political parties from countries not in the European Union, like the United Kingdom and Gibraltar.
The Gibraltar delegates were former Minister Hon Steven Linares and members Karim Aouhar and Stevie Linares.
There was an electoral process as the Congress elected the new leadership of the party, including its new President and a number of Vice Presidents. It also heard from Liberals in government in different parts of Europe about the political situation in their own countries.
The Congress provided an opportunity to touch base with the international team of the U.K. Liberal Democrats, including Baroness Sal Brinton who was elected as one of the Vice Presidents. There were high level political debates on the state of EU-China relations and a number of resolutions and thematic Roundtable discussions.
The event permitted the Gibraltar delegates to explain the position of Gibraltar on a number of issues and to update other participants.
The Liberal Party of Gibraltar became an affiliate member of ALDE in 2015, at a time when Gibraltar was still in the EU, having been a member of its forerunner ELDE before that.
