The Governor’s Office has insisted today that comments made by Dr. Chris Tydeman in his evidence to the UK’s House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee ‘do not accurately reflect either the Governor’s Constitutional role or his public position on sovereign issues’.

A statement insists that the UK does not recognise Spain’s SCI listing nor its attempt to designate an SAC. This position has been made clear to the Spanish Government and was even highlighted during the Foreign Secretary’s statement to Parliament on December 10^th 2012.

Dr. Tydeman, during his address, insisted that enforcement within Gibraltar Waters was not good. He insisted that the UK Government was resistant to using the Royal Navy for fisheries protection.

Dr. Tydeman has worked with the Gibraltar Government in the development of the fishing dispute report, which he hinted would be published in a few weeks.

The Governor’s statement continues, noting that he has, at every opportunity, ensured that the interests of Gibraltar have been properly represented to the UK and has repeatedly made clear that Gibraltar welcomes the UK’s unequivocal position on British sovereignty of Gibraltar and British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
