Oct 07 GSD Ask for Commonwealth Park Update

GSD GibraltarThe GSD is today calling on the Government to issue a statement providing details of the progress on the Commonwealth Park project.  The call comes amidst a number of reports received by the Opposition of a number of difficulties and setbacks being experienced on site, including problems relating to the proximity of the water table, burst mains pipes and other complications.

The Opposition is, for the avoidance of doubt, calling for Government to provide information as follows:

  1. Details of the costs incurred so far in relation to all aspects of the project including, but not limited to, costs in addition to the original sum of £87,000 incurred as part of the enabling works, the cost of providing alternative parking areas next to Kings Wharf and elsewhere, including the actual cost of creating the parking spaces and, where relevant, rental costs, if any. The Opposition is urging the Government to provide a full and detailed account of all relevant details, whether specifically requested or not, which would reasonably be considered pertinent;
  2. The Government's current estimate of the total expected cost of the Commonwealth Park project, including the additional costs and expense incurred in the context of setbacks, redesigns or other unforeseen changes to the project as well as the provision of double the number of car parking spaces which were available in the original Commonwealth Parade car park (which had been promised would be delivered underground, below the park); and
  3. Details of how the Government plans to fund this project, in particular, whether it intends to fund them from the proceeds of savers’ debentures deposited with the Gibraltar Savings Bank.

Selwyn Figueras, shadow spokesperson for traffic said "it has been some time since the Government issued a public statement in relation to Dr Cortes' Commonwealth Park and given that, for various reasons, the matter has not been raised in Parliament for some time, we are calling on Government to issue a progress report.

The public is keen to know how much this is costing the taxpayer to provide it and, critically, when the public can expect double the number of car parking spaces to be available.

In this context, we are calling on the Government to give a full and frank account of how things are progressing."
