Apr 10 - Picardo Welcomes DPC Europa Point Stadium Debate

picardoFollowing the Chief Minister visit to Malta this week he touched upon a number of positive local matters that have been mentioned in the news recently. Commenting on the progress of the soon to be opened Commonwealth park Mr. Picardo said, ‘On our way to Convent Place, we drove slightly out of our way so that I could see the excellent work being done at the new Commonwealth Park which I know will soon be providing a much-needed splash of green space for Gibraltar’s families.

'This will be an open and beautiful area for people to congregate and enjoy. We will shortly publish legislation to protect what will, no doubt, become Gibraltar’s iconic green space.’

With regards to this week’s DPC meeting on the Europa Point stadium, he added, ‘While I was away in Malta I was able, thanks to the internet, to watch a little of the Development Planning Commission’s meeting.

‘I was struck by the cross-section of our community who were given the chance to air their views. Everyone, including the chairman of the Opposition party, had a chance to speak and make their views known – not only to the meeting but, thanks to GBC’s camera, to those watching at home. Members of the press were there to report on the meeting and to offer their analysis, both on-line and in the following day’s papers. What a triumph of openness and transparency compared with previous secret Planning regimes which we busted open! I am truly proud to have introduced this openness that now allows community participation in important decisions about the future of Gibraltar.’

He added that back in the office he has been discussing various major inward investment initiatives, which will bring even more cash and jobs into Gibraltar’s economy.
