Mar 20 - European Commission Claims Border Queues are 'A Thing of the Past'

queuesThe European Commission has today given assurances to Julie Girling, Member of the European Parliament for South West England and Gibraltar, that the lengthy border delays of recent years will become a thing of the past following the reconstruction of the vehicle and passenger crossing point between Gibraltar and Spain.

Mrs Girling asked the Commission whether the Spanish Government has agreed to finalise the works on its side of the border with Gibraltar by the Commission's deadline of summer 2015. The answer provided on behalf of the Commission states; "The Spanish authorities informed the Commission that the finalisation of the reconstruction works at the crossing point at La Línea de la Concepción which are the most relevant for the passengers and vehicles flows is estimated at the end of June 2015."

Commenting on the news, Mrs Girling said, these works cannot come to an end soon enough for the hundreds of local people who use the border crossing each day. The delays have been going on for too long and I am delighted that these works should be finally resolved by June. I will of course continue to monitor the situation and apply further pressure to the Commission if required.’
