Jun 03 - Works at Dudley Ward Tunnel
Works to install fire hydrants, fire extinguishers and emergency telephones along Dudley Ward Way and Brian Navarro Way have been completed.
The works, which have been undertaken by Sharrock Shand Limited and supported by Aquagib Limited, have seen the installation of a fire fighting wet main incorporating a number of fire hydrants, covering the area from the south of the Both Worlds complex to the southernmost entrance of the Dudley Ward Way tunnel.
The works, which have been managed by Technical Services Department, have entailed the laying of over 800 metres of water main and cable ducts.
In addition, with the support of Gibtelecom, the contractor has installed telecoms infrastructure to enable three emergency call points to be installed within the tunnel. The call points, which are linked to the Royal Gibraltar Police’s control room, will, in the event of an accident or other emergency, permit members of the public to contact the emergency services from within the tunnel.
The Minister for Transport, Traffic and Technical Services, The Hon Paul Balban, said: “The installation of these safety measures within Dudley Ward Tunnel are a key manifesto commitment.
“These important safety features, 2 of which are being announced today, that is, fire hydrants and emergency telephones will make transit through the tunnel safer providing some firefighting capability and allowing a faster response time for emergency services should any incident occur within the tunnel.
“These measures should have been provided at the time that the tunnel was reopened by the GSD in 2010. Providing ventilation within the tunnel is the next step, one which Technical Services Department has already embarked upon and will be completed in the near future.”
