Jul 21 - HMS Ambush Involved In Minor Collision
An investigation is underway after the nuclear submarine HMS Ambush was involved in a “glancing collision” with a merchant vessel in Gibraltar waters.
The incident is said to have occurred at around 1.30pm yesterday while the submarine was submerged.
A statement from the Ministry of Defence said: “At approximately 1330 local time [yesterday], HMS Ambush, an Astute-class submarine, while submerged and conducting a training exercise was involved in a glancing collision with a merchant vessel off the coast of Gibraltar.
“We are in contact with the merchant vessel and initial indications are that it has not sustained damage.
“The submarine suffered some external damage but there is absolutely no damage to her nuclear plant and no member of the ship’s company was injured in the incident.
“An immediate investigation is being conducted.”
The submarine entered Gibraltar yesterday evening for further checks. The front part of the sub's conning tower was covered this morning as can been seen in these photos and other images show some external damage.
The MoD assures the public that there are no safety concerns associated with HMS Ambush.
