Aug 16 - Official Visit To Gibraltar Parliament For Jerusalem City Councillor

It is no surprise that sisters Marlene Hassan-Nahon and Fleur Hassan-Nahoum entered into politics after growing up in the same household as their father, Sir Joshua Hassan.

Today, both sisters met with the Mayor and Speaker of the House Adolfo Canepa in Gibraltar Parliament.

Fleur serves as one of 31 city councillors in Jerusalem City Council, and holds the portfolio for transport and heritage sites as part of her role.

She adds: “I have a lot of responsibility, but I also feel like I have a lot of impact on the good of the City.”

When asked whether politics is something both Fleur and Marlene carry in their genes, she said: “I don’t know whether it is something we carry in our genes or something we’ve learnt at home.

“We learnt about public service, and about trying to advance society, and trying to contribute towards society.

“We both try to contribute to society in our individual ways and I hope we’re making our father proud in what we’re doing.”

Fleur said she caught the politics bug and was inspired to enter into politics after helping her sister when she stood for the bi-election. For the past five years she has been running her own business writing speeches and a messaging service in Jerusalem, and was asked to help a political party with their campaign and decided to join them and run for the city council elections.

Fleur grew up in Gibraltar and left at the age of 19 to go study law at King’s College in London, and said one of her proudest moments was being called to the bar by her father.

She and her husband moved to Jerusalem nearly 15 years ago and she visits Gibraltar on a regular basis to see her friends and family.
