Nov 16 – Gibraltar’s First Ark Day – Saturday 26th November

On the 26th November from midday The ARK Gibraltar will take their acts of random kindness into the streets.

The ARK stands for the The Act of Random Kindness, a non profit group meeting every Monday 4 pm - 5 pm. The aim of the group is to provide a fun and creative environment in which the children will learn skills associated with emotional intelligence such as empathy, kindness, caring, sharing, patience, cooperation etc.

These skills are important for children to develop positive social relationships and adopt a social consciousness about the needs of their local community and environment. Caring children grow into caring and socially conscious adults which stands them in good stead in whatever path they choose to follow.

Each week the children will work on creating bookmarks, paper flowers, pictures, badges, t-shirts, songs, plays... whatever they feel they can put together and use in carrying out acts of random kindness.

Participants will each be given an ARK diary and will be encouraged to keep a record of their own Acts of Random Kindness between sessions as well as discussing each week in circle time, what they did, how it made them feel, how the recipient of their act of random kindness reacted and how they felt about being treated kindly.

On the 26th November, while supported by their adult carers, the children will distribute the gifts they have made to members of the public and ask them in return to pass on the act of kindness. Between 10 am and 12 pm there will be an opportunity for children who have not attended the Monday sessions to make some gifts to take into the streets and Piazza Cafe have kindly provided the upstairs of the restaurant for the group and anyone wishing to attend. The children will be encouraged to talk about their experiences afterwards and share stories of how their act of kindness was received.

They will be supervised by adults at all times during this process and will be encouraged to come up with their own ideas so that they stay within their own comfort zones in terms of the actions they undertake.

The organisers say they will film this process and hope to make a short film for YouTube about Gibraltar's First ARK day!"
