Jan 16 - Unite Concerned About MoD Plans For Nuclear Monitors

Unite the Union says it is concerned about Ministry of Defence plans to remove the allowance paid to locally employed nuclear monitors (Local Emergency Monitoring Team). The union says it has had to raise, once more, what it sees as a “clear breach of consultation policies and current local legislation” by the MoD.

A statement continued: “We have had representations made by a large number of our members, who have been informed by letter that the current allowance being paid as a nuclear monitor, (Local Emergency Monitoring Team) will cease in April 2017. They have been told verbally, that they can volunteer post April 2017, but without the remuneration covered in our collective agreement. Furthermore, what has been relayed is that if no LECs are willing to take this task on, this will be carried out by stationed military personnel or by visiting units, which we understand do not have the relevant training, experience or local knowledge.

“Unite has been kept in the dark by the MoD on this matter, even though that a collective agreement between both parties, remains in force.

“It is difficult to accept that the finances of the MoD are so critical on something so crucial that needs to be maintained as part of the service.

“Unite calls for the MOD to reconsider its position and make good use of the vast experience of the members in question, who have been carrying out this highly responsible task for decades.”
